Short History

The area was established by settlers as Denver City back in 1858, when the area was still part of the old Kansas Territory. Starting life as a stopover point for prospectors aiming to cash in on the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, Denver City rapidly expanded into a major hub for settlers who took advantage of the rich land to grow crops and settle down. It was so named after Kansas Governor James W. Denver in an attempt to make the town as the new seat of the former Arapahoe County, Kansas. After incorporation in 1861, it suffered stagnation in development through most of the Civil War era, only coming back to life after locals successfully created their own link to the growing Union Pacific railway called the Denver Pacific Railway. Growth was further fostered by the creation of the State of Denver, the silver mining boom, and the continued arrival of new immigrants and investors via the railway. Despite the Panic of 1893 and successive droughts which weakened its economy, the city soldiered on, recovering most of its lost population and economic status at the turn of the century. Most of Denver’s urban growth can be traced to the post-war boom, as many soldiers who passed through town for training or recuperation chose to stay after the war, leading to a need for new housing projects. Downtown and suburban growth followed soon after, and through much of the 20th Century the city experienced a great deal of expansion in all aspects, leading to the metropolis it is today.

Demography & Topography

The city is considered the 24th most populous US city according to 2010 data by the US Census Bureau. Around 682,545 individuals call Denver home, split into over 250,000 households. The average household income stands at $45,438. Majority of the population, or around 36%, are aged between 25 and 44.
Culture and social life are very much alive in Denver. The city plays host to various historical sites dating back to and commemorating the pioneer years, as well as the various key moments in the history of the city. There are various museums for art and culture throughout town like the Denver Art Museum. Opera houses and theaters also abound in such town centers as LoDo.
